I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained me. Psalm 3:5
How deep do you sleep? Some people sleep so deeply that they make strange noises. If you have ever been kept awake by someone who is snoring, you will know just how deeply some people can sleep. Restful sleep is one of the most valuable blessings God gives to His children. To lie down, tired and worn out, and to then awaken refreshed and strengthened is a wonderful experience. You will sleep even better if you trust God and hope for His continued presence throughout the night. Then you can hand over your daily stresses and tensions to Him, as well as you anxieties and worries. You will know that the problems and difficulties that life throws at you can do you no harm.
You can feel quite sure that when you lie down to rest, you are in the arms of Christ. Remember also that when you go to “off duty” and fall asleep, that God neither slumbers nor sleeps (Ps 121:4). He keeps watch over you all day and all night. For God it is a service of love. He is happy when He is protecting and preserving you. Possibly His watchfulness is even more focused when you are sleeping than when you are awake, because while you are sleeping you can’t defend yourself.
We are often so worried about things that we can’t sleep, but like God says in His word: “Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?” Matthew 6:27. Jesus slept well. He slept through the storm of Galilee and was not worried on single moment. He will keep you safe when you are asleep – if your hope is fixed on Him. And when you cannot sleep, don’t count sheep, talk to the Shepherd.
