I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained me. Psalm 3:5
Different things keep different people going. The mother who is dedicated to her children is motivated by their need for her love. The athlete dreams of an Olympic medal and this is what drives him through the long and difficult months of training. The hope for success keeps them all going. Many Christian disciples have endured illnesses, in the hope that they will meet Jesus and their loved ones in heaven.
David took note of the natural process of sleep: sleeping and waking up again. But he also knew that the renewed strenght that he received through sleep came from God. God restores him with each sleep and kept him going. God will also preserve you in the same way.
When you are overworked and tired, Jesus will refresh you. If you feel lonely and abandoned, God will stay with you. Throughout the years He has been with you – even when you were not aware of His presence.
If you don’t know where to turn to and you feel that life no longer has any sense or meaning – He will still keep you going. When you are flat broke and don’t know where your next meal will come from, He will somehow see you through. If your life is busy falling apart as a result of mistakes and misunderstandings, He will restore your balance. When you fear the future, keep hoping that Christ will meet you, because He is already there.
If it were not for hopes, the heart would break. ~ Thomas Fuller
