Names meant so much to people during Bible times than they do now to us. In the early years of the Bible, we see that names of people were so important, they described their character
Genesis 17 “ God gave new names to Abram and Sarai. He was changing things in their life, so He wanted to change their names and show them what He was doing in them and through them.
When God gave them new names, he was beginning to speak of non existent things, as though they already existed
So what is in a name? Lot more than we realise today, take a look at Sarai, she was a barren woman, who probably had a poor self image, because in biblical societies, so much of a women’s worth depended on her ability to bear children. She definitely had no hope of ever having a child BUT God changed her name to Sarah, meaning Princess
So every time Abraham (father of multitude) called her name Sarah, they were changing her self image, because she herself was changing when she accepted that new name
Following this idea through to the New Testament and to our lives today, I encourage you to remember the significance of a name, when you speak the name of Jesus. This name declares Hid character, it proclaims all that He is, all He has done, all He still wants to accomplish in your life
